Užupis – vapaakaupunki, joka ehkä tahtoisi olla valtio

Užupis on kaupunginosa Vilnan vanhan kaupungin kupeessa. Se sijoittuu Vilniajoen mutkaan. Kaupunginosa on kuin pikkukaupunki, mutta oikeastaan se tahtoisi olla valtio. Sillä on diplomaattisuhteet Liettuan ulkoministeriöön, edustaja Moskovassa ja 12-miehinen armeija. Tämä kaikki ei katukuvassa näkynyt, mutta parin tunnin kävelyretken arvoinen Užupis ehdottomasti Vilnan-kävijälle on.

Jostain syystä unohdimme mennä katsomaan Užupisin perustuslakia, joka on 41-kohtainen ja kirjoitettu peilipinnoille liettuaksi ja englanniksi. Perustuslakitaulut on kiinnitetty johonkin muuriin, mutta tosiaan en ole sitä omin silmin nähnyt. Ainoa varsinainen velvollisuus lienee oman nimen muistaminen. Perustuslaissa on tärkeitä asioita ainakin edistämään suvaitsevaisuutta. Minua se ainakin puhuttelee ja viehättää, esimerkiksi artiklat epäonnistumisen oikeudesta, oikeudesta olla koira, olla ymmärtämättä mitään, rakastaa ja tulla rakastetuksi.

Matkailijan näkökulmasta Užupis on sekoitus hyvin hoidettuja taloja ja katunäkymiä, mutta myös rappioromantiikkaa ja myös sellaista rappiota, josta on vaikea repiä romantiikkaa. Katuja kulkiessa huomaa kaupunginosan boheemin maineen taiteilijakaupunginosana mutta myös sen, että alueen suosio on kasvanut ja hinnat nousseet.

Pääkadun varrella liikkeet vaikuttivat minusta kauniilta. Sain sen käsityksen, että ainakin joissakin myytäisiin paikallisia tuotteita. Harmillista, että olimme sunnuntaina, jolloin kaupat olivat kiinni.
